about bedfordshire

Bedfordshire is a county in the East of England, bordered by Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire and is the fourteenth most densely populated county of England, with over half the population of the county living in Luton (236,000) and the county town, Bedford (102,000).

The traditional nickname for people from Bedfordshire is “Clangers”, deriving from a local dish comprising a suet crust pastry filled with meat in one end and jam in the other.

  • John Bunyan, a writer and preacher wrote The Pilgrim’s Progress in Bedford. It has become one of the cornerstones of English literature and sold more copies in more languages (over 200!) than any other book apart from the Bible.
  • The Bedford River Festival started in 1978 to celebrate the completion of a navigable water route from Bedford to the coast, it is the second largest free outdoor event after the (in)famous Notting Hill Carnival.
  • After key privileges were removed from the aristocracy by the British government throughout the 20th century, the Duke of Bedford realised he must start making a profit or risk going broke. He hence turned his estate into The Woburn Safari Park in 1970, it plays a key role in modern conservation efforts.
  • Luton has long been associated with the hat industry and Luton Town football club are known as the Hatters.
  • The town’s Vauxhall plant was saved from closure earlier this year with the announcement that the new Vivaro van would be built at the site.
