stuvac: a rookies guide to the uni break

stuvac: the universal student word for ‘relief’

If you’re still going with exams, we feel for you, but some of us are already on holiday. And it feels good. Stuvac, or ‘student vacation’ is awesome, because it’s a well-deserved break from the hard slog that was the Semester just gone. Whether you plan on working the entire time or sitting back and doing nothing, here is your guide to not screwing up stuvac. And yes – it can be stuffed up.

Don’t spend all your money

If you’re going to go big, that’s cool. More power to you. But if you don’t plan on working during Stuvac you’ve got another thing coming. Throwing down $80 a night on drinks, food and anything else will start off your next Semester eating ramen and canned beans. I know it’s exciting, but you’ll regret splurging your money when you don’t have any left.

Do something different

And by that I mean: don’t sit around doing what you’d do on a normal night in. Stuvac is meant to clear your head and let you get your wits about you before you buckle down for next Semester. Get outside, go for a day few day trips, go visit your parents. Do something that you wouldn’t get to do during Semester, or you’ll regret it when you don’t have a choice but to stay put.

Refresh your surroundings

Our bedrooms can become a bit of a crime scene during exam period. Once you’ve finished up for the Semester be sure to do a bit of freshening up. Change your sheets, get rid of all those dirty dishes on your desk, and let some light in the room. You’ll be amazed what a difference that will make to your mood once it’s done. You’ll feel energised for the break and you’ll be off to the right start.

Get moving

So many of us end up being confined to a series of indoor spaces during the Semester. Especially in winter. We go from studying in our rooms, to studying in the library, to working in tutorials or lectures, and back home again. There’s not a lot of Vitamin D on offer. Now that you’re schedule has freed up a bit, give your body what it needs and get a little bit of sun.

If you’re working…

A lot of us will have part-time or casual jobs. That’s awesome, it means you’re keeping yourself busy and making some cash at the same time. If you’re the kind of person who wants to up their workload when uni finishes, that’s cool, just make sure it doesn’t burn you out before next Semester. Everyone deserves a break, including you!

Make a plan

While it shouldn’t be the first thing on your mind, towards the end of stuvac it’s a good idea to plan your Semester ahead. Make sure you’ve got yourself a diary or planner and start writing down important dates. Check out your course outlines and approach the new Semester with a clear head. Just make sure you’ve had a decent rest first 😉
