The new year always brings with it a positive energy that we all love. We can’t help but feel optimistic about the next twelve months as it’s a clean slate with new opportunities, new experiences and a new us. We write down all our resolutions for the coming year and we tackle them head on all at once. This approach works very well for some people, however for others that ambitious energy slowly dissipates amongst all the chaos that eventually interferes. Here’s the one thing you need to know to win in 2016!
Writing everything you want down pen to paper is an excellent move forward in achieving your resolutions. You’ve defined your ambitions and are therefore consciously aware of what you need to do to achieve them.
Building on this, one step up that actually makes all the difference is knowing the difference between your priorities and your priority. Priorities are all the things you need to do, whereas your priority is the most important thing that you SHOULD do above all else. Whilst we all have so much on our plate and a lot can be classed as being equally important, there’s always a way to narrow it all down to one thing.
Of course there are the daily responsibilities that we can’t neglect. You still need to eat and sleep otherwise you, like, won’t be alive 🙁 You still need to do your assignments and study for exams otherwise you’ll have to do the semester again…..etc. The overall point here is to spend the time to figure out what the most important resolution is for you out of the entire list you plan to tackle. Even if you have only two or three resolutions, still figure out which of those will pack the most punch for the year.
It’s better to focus on that one priority and succeed than it is to try divide your attention equally amongst everything and not really bring anything home. If you hit everything, excellent! But if you don’t succeed at the less important stuff, it’s ok because you would’ve succeeded at the one thing that will make the biggest difference in your life. Find your priority for 2016 and you’ll never feel lost or unsure of what you should be doing when things get a bit chaotic.
With the defined list of everything you want, the most important question you can ask yourself is “what is the one thing in this list that if achieved, would make everything else unnecessary or a lot easier to achieve?”. In other words what will bring you the most bang-for-your-buck results.
If we ask ourselves quality questions, we end up finding quality answers. Here are some examples you could ask yourself to help narrow things down:
Knowing what the most important thing is to you makes it a world of a lot easier to realign yourself and refocus whenever things get hectic and crazy. Find your one thing, make a plan, trust in the process and realign yourself whenever needed. Worst case scenario: even if you don’t hit it head on, you’ll be that much closer to it than if you tried to do everything and miss.
So get after it and enjoy the momentum that will no doubt come with that level of focus and direction.
